What Can Cause Elevated CA125 Levels?
CA125 (Cancer Antigen 125) is a protein that can be measured in the blood and is commonly used as a tumour marker associated with ovarian cancer assessment and monitoring. However, elevated CA125 levels do not automatically mean cancer is present.
In fact, there are several non-cancerous conditions that may also cause raised CA125 levels.
Non-Cancerous Causes of Elevated CA125
CA125 levels may be elevated due to a variety of benign conditions, including:
- Endometriosis
- Ovarian cysts
- Fibroids
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Liver disease
- Pregnancy
- Menstruation
- Benign pelvic conditions
Because CA125 is not specific to ovarian cancer, healthcare professionals typically use it alongside additional investigations such as ultrasound scans, imaging and clinical assessment.
Can Elevated CA125 Mean Ovarian Cancer?
Elevated CA125 levels can sometimes be associated with ovarian cancer, particularly epithelial ovarian cancer. However, not all people with ovarian cancer will have raised CA125 levels, and many people with elevated CA125 do not have cancer.
For this reason, CA125 testing should not be used as a standalone diagnostic tool.
When Is CA125 Testing Used?
Healthcare professionals may use CA125 testing to:
- Support further clinical investigation
- Monitor ovarian cancer treatment
- Assess response to treatment
- Monitor for recurrence
