What the 25 mIU/mL detection level means

A test's detection level is the smallest amount of the pregnancy hormone hCG it will react to. This test detects hCG from 25 mIU/mL, which is the level most women have reached by the day their period is due.

Tests with a lower threshold can pick up hCG a few days earlier, but they also react to levels so low that a repeat test a few days later often reads negative. Testing at 25 mIU/mL from the day your period is due gives you a result you can rely on.

How to use

1. Remove the test from its foil wrapper and take off the cap.
2. Hold the absorbent tip in your urine stream, or dip it in a collected sample for the time specified in the instructions.
3. Replace the cap and lay the test flat. A symbol on the screen shows the test is working.
4. Read your result within 3 minutes. 

You can test at any time of day, though first-morning urine contains the most concentrated hCG and is the best choice if you're testing early.

Common questions

When is the earliest I can test?
This test is designed for use from the day your period is due. Testing earlier than that increases the chance of a negative result even if you are pregnant, because hCG may not yet have reached 25 mIU/mL.

It says Not Pregnant but my period still hasn't come.
hCG rises quickly in early pregnancy, so a test taken a few days later may give a different result. That's what the second test in the pack is for. If your period still hasn't arrived after that, speak to your GP.

Can anything affect the result?
Drinking a lot of fluid before testing dilutes your urine and can lower the hCG concentration. Fertility treatments containing hCG can also affect the result, as can a recent pregnancy, miscarriage or termination — hCG can stay in your system for several weeks. If you're unsure, ask your GP or pharmacist.

It says Pregnant. What now?
Contact your GP or midwife to book your first appointment. You can self-refer to most NHS maternity services online.
