1. Chlamydia Rapid Test — results in 10 minutes

Detects Chlamydia trachomatis antigens from a swab sample. Chlamydia is the most commonly diagnosed STI in the UK and frequently causes no symptoms at all, which is why routine testing matters even when nothing feels wrong. The manufacturer's package insert reports 96.0% sensitivity and 98.3% specificity. Designed for self-testing; read the result at 10 minutes and not after 20.

2. Gonorrhea Rapid Test — results in 10 minutes

Detects Neisseria gonorrhoeae antigens, again from a swab. Gonorrhoea often travels alongside chlamydia and can be equally quiet, particularly in women. The package insert reports 96.0% sensitivity and 98.3% specificity. Designed for self-testing; do not interpret the result after 30 minutes.

3. Candida Albicans Thrush Test — results in 15 minutes

A vaginal swab test that detects Candida albicans antigen directly, so you can tell whether that itching and thick white discharge is a yeast infection before reaching for an antifungal. Combined accuracy of up to 97.6%. Particularly useful if you get recurrent thrush and want to stop treating on guesswork, or want to check whether treatment has worked.

Worth knowing: this test looks for Candida albicans specifically. It will not pick up bacterial vaginosis or other causes of similar symptoms.

4. Urine Infection (Cystitis) Test Strip — results in 2 minutes

A four-pad dipstick that screens a mid-stream urine sample for leukocytes (white blood cells), blood, protein and nitrites — the standard markers of a urinary tract infection. Comes with a urine collection cup, a colour chart and an advice insert explaining what each pad means and what to do next. Two minutes from dip to answer.

5. HPV Antigen Rapid Test (Vaginal Swab) — results in 15 minutes

Screens a vaginal swab for HPV antigens, including the high-risk types 16 and 18 associated with cervical cell changes and genital warts. Reported 95.6% sensitivity and 98.7% specificity.

It is an antigen test rather than an HPV DNA test, and it is not a replacement for your NHS cervical screening invitation.

Why these five together

Symptoms in this area are famously non-specific. Burning when you urinate could be cystitis, thrush, chlamydia or gonorrhoea. Unusual discharge could be any of several things. Testing one cause at a time means days of waiting between attempts — and, often, treating the wrong thing in the meantime.

How to use them

Each test comes with its own illustrated instructions. Read them before you start — timings and sample collection genuinely affect accuracy.

1. Collect your sample. Vaginal swab for thrush and HPV, swab for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, mid-stream urine for the cystitis strip.
2. Prepare it using the buffer supplied with that test, where applicable.
3. Apply to the cassette or dip the strip, following the instructions in the pack.
4. Time it. Use a timer. Read at 2 minutes for the urine strip, 10 minutes for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, 15 minutes for thrush and HPV.
5. Read the result. Two lines is positive. One line at the control position is negative. No control line means the test is invalid and should be repeated with a fresh one.

Store all tests between 2–30°C. Do not freeze. Keep cassettes sealed until use and check the expiry date on the pack.

Important information

These are screening tests, not diagnoses. A positive result should always be followed up with a GP, pharmacist or sexual health clinic — STIs need treatment, and partners usually need testing too. A negative result does not completely rule out infection, particularly if you tested very soon after exposure or if symptoms are ongoing.
