How the chlamydia and gonorrhoea self-tests work
Each test includes illustrated instructions. Read them before you start, because timing affects accuracy.
Collect your sample
Use the swab supplied, following the male or female instructions in the pack.
Prepare it
Mix the swab with the buffer solutions supplied with the test.
Add it to the cassette
Add 3 drops of the solution to the test cassette and start a timer.
Read your result
Read at 10 minutes. Two lines is positive, one line at C is negative.

Which test kit should I choose?
The chlamydia test kit is the simplest option if chlamydia is your only concern. The men's kit adds gonorrhoea and urine infection tests, and the women's kit adds gonorrhoea, thrush and urine infection tests. Both kits also include tests for professional use, shown in the table above.
Which of the tests are self-tests?
The chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests are designed for self-testing, and the thrush test and urine infection strips come with their own instructions. The HPV and HIV tests in the kits are professional-use tests, not self-tests. They are made for clinical and healthcare settings, and their results should be interpreted by a healthcare professional.
How accurate are the chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests?
The manufacturer's package inserts report 96.0% sensitivity and 98.3% specificity for both tests. A negative result doesn't completely rule out infection, especially if you test very soon after sex or your symptoms continue.
How long do results take?
Chlamydia and gonorrhoea results take 10 minutes, the thrush test 15 minutes and the urine infection strip 2 minutes. Don't read the chlamydia test after 20 minutes or the gonorrhoea test after 30 minutes.
What should I do if a result is positive?
These are screening tests, so follow up a positive result with your GP, a pharmacist or a sexual health clinic. Most infections need treatment, and partners usually need testing too.
