What are uric acid test strips

Uric acid test strips are small diagnostic tools used to measure the level of uric acid in your blood (and sometimes urine). They’re commonly used at home or in clinics to help monitor conditions like Gout or assess general metabolic health.

What do uric acid test strips measure?

They measure uric acid, a waste product formed when your body breaks down purines (found in foods like red meat, seafood, and alcohol). High levels can lead to crystal formation in joints—causing gout—or kidney issues.

How do the uric acid tests strips work?

Most home test kits are finger-prick blood tests, similar to glucose testing:

  1. Use a lancet to prick your finger
  2. Place a drop of blood onto the strip
  3. Insert the strip into a compatible meter
  4. Get a reading in seconds

Blood testing is most accurate for monitoring gout.

Normal versus high uric acid levels

Typical blood uric acid ranges:

  • Men: ~3.4–7.0 mg/dL
  • Women: ~2.4–6.0 mg/dL

Higher levels may indicate:

  • Risk of Gout
  • Kidney problems
  • High purine intake or dehydration

Why use uric acid test strips?

  • Monitor gout at home without frequent GP visits
  • Track how diet or medication affects levels
  • Quick results (usually under a minute)
  • Helpful for people on treatments like Allopurinol

Things to be aware of when using uric acid test strips

  • Accuracy depends on correct technique (clean hands, proper blood sample)
  • Meters need calibration and compatible strips
  • Results can vary slightly from lab tests
  • Always confirm high readings with a healthcare professional

Who should consider using uric acid test strips?

  • People diagnosed with Gout
  • Those with a history of kidney stones
  • Individuals monitoring diet (e.g. high-protein or ketogenic diets)
  • Anyone advised by their GP to track uric acid levels

How should I store Easylife test strips?

Keep your Easylife test strips sealed in their original container, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Once opened, use the strips within the recommended time period indicated on the packaging.

How do I use Easylife test strips correctly?

Make sure the correct code chip supplied with the test strips you are using has been fitted into the meter. Insert the Easylife test strip into your meter and the meter will switch on and display the four digit code for the test strips. If the test strip is in date, not previously been used and fully functional, the meter will then indicate a flashing drop symbol meaning the test strip is ready to receive the blood sample.

Apply a small drop of blood to the strip as indicated in the instructions until the meter indicates sufficient blood has been received , and then wait for your reading to appear on the screen. The time taken for the result to appear varies between different tests. Always follow the instructions in your Easylife meter manual for the most accurate results. Always follow the instructions in your Easylife meter manual for the most accurate results. We have produced instructional videos to show you exactly how to perform this procedure, if you are unsure.
