eB-Tchol Cholesterol Meter product features.
This monitor system is a dedicated total cholesterol testing meter for screening total blood cholesterol levels. It does not differentiate LDL from HDL or Triglycerides. It is intended as a screening device for detecting elevated blood cholesterol, and for measuring levels after and during treatment or dietary modification. The advantages of this system is it only requires a small blood volume to measure, half the volume of most other cholesterol meters. This makes repeat testing easier and less painful. It is also fast to display the result 30 seconds on average, thats 4 times faster than other meters.

I bought the eB-Tchol test kit because my total cholesterol readings had been around 6.0 for a number of years & I wanted to monitor it at home while I took plant sterol supplements to help reduce my cholesterol. I contacted ValueMed after my first few readings with eB-Tchol were all 4.3, as I was concerned that the low readings did not reflect my clinical tests. They sent me a new meter then control test solution to ensure the calibration was correct. The control readings were within the specified range so all looked OK. During a 6 month period my total cholesterol fell my 0.5 according to the GP clinical test but my eB-Tchol readings remained randomly between 4.0 & 4.6 which was strange. These readings were always outside the accuracy range claimed on the manufacturers data sheet that's provided with the test strips (i.e., over 90% of matched eB-Tchol/clinical tests were within 10% of each other & 98% of matched tests within 15%). I realise that eB-Tchol is a relatively cheap home test system but I would expect it's results would bear some resemblance to reality. As it is, my consistently low, little changing results have been misleading. I haven't tried any similar home test kits from other manufacturers so I can't say if this is a common problem...
Dear Brendan, thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed review and for sharing your experience with the eB-Tchol system. We’re sorry to hear that your home readings have not closely matched your GP’s laboratory results.
Home cholesterol meters, including the eB-Tchol, are designed to provide a convenient way to monitor trends in total cholesterol over time rather than to replace laboratory testing. Laboratory results are obtained using venous samples analysed under tightly controlled conditions, while home systems use capillary blood. This difference, along with several other factors such as sample volume, hand temperature, hydration, and the way the blood drop is applied to the strip, can influence readings.
It’s also important that both the laboratory test and the home (capillary) test are performed under similar conditions — ideally when fasted, as recently ingested food can temporarily affect cholesterol levels and lead to inconsistent comparisons.
We appreciate that you worked with us to verify your meter using control solution and replacement equipment — it’s reassuring that those checks confirmed correct calibration. However, as you’ve seen, the absolute values from home and lab testing can differ, particularly near the upper and lower ends of the reference range.
If you’re still unhappy with the meter and feel you’re unable to obtain consistent results, please don’t hesitate to contact us at support@valuemed.co.uk
to arrange a return for a full refund. We want all our customers to have confidence in the products they use and are always happy to resolve any ongoing concerns.
Your feedback is extremely valuable and will be shared with the manufacturer for review. Thank you again for your thoughtful comments and for thoroughly testing the system over several months.
